Frey, M.D., a New York dermatologist who's been in practice for over 20 years, says "although there is no consensus on how often a person with healthy skin should wash their face, research clearly shows that folks with acne benefit from twice daily face cleansing." And if you regularly wear makeup, Lindsey Blondin, lead esthetician of George the Salon in Chicago, recommends doing two cleanses consecutively. The first cleanse "is to break up makeup, dirt, and oil on your face," while the second run through will "cleanse the skin itself."

Isotretinoin is a particularly strong retinoid. It has a mixed reputation, but among dermatologists it’s the finisher for patients with severe acne. “If you have an acne patient that doesn’t respond to anything, [isotretinoin] can really be a game changer,” board-certified dermatologist Adam Friedman tells SELF. Commonly referred as Accutane even though that particular brand was discontinued, isotretinoin is an oral retinoid, and it has all the same benefits of a topical retinol but is even more effective.
Eggs aren’t just for eating, they also make a great last-minute fix for acne problems. Separate an egg white from the yolk and whisk it. Apply the whisked egg to your face using clean fingers and leave it on the pimple for 20 minutes, or if it’s very swollen, leave it on the pimples overnight and wash it off in the morning. Bonus: If you have scarring like I do, egg whites are also a great solution because the enzymes in egg whites acts as a source of lightener for the skin.

You might think washing your face religiously will make it just about impossible for your pores to get clogged, and therefore keep your skin free from breakouts.
